If you’re the kind of person who skips breakfast just because there’s “no time,” we’ve got a game-changer for you – Instant Jhalmuri. This popular Bengali street snack isn’t just reserved for lazy afternoons or tea time anymore. When made with the right balance of spice, crunch, and freshness, Jhalmuri becomes a quick, no-fuss breakfast that’s light, flavorful, and ready in minutes.
“Jhal” means spicy, and “muri” means puffed rice. Jhalmuri is essentially a spiced puffed rice mix loaded with chopped veggies, tangy mustard oil, and traditional Indian seasonings. Think of it as India’s answer to trail mix—but fresh, bold, and bursting with flavor.
And the best part? No cooking needed. Just chop, mix, and eat.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups puffed rice (muri)
- 1 small onion – finely chopped
- 1 small tomato – finely chopped
- 1 green chili – finely chopped (optional)
- 1 small boiled potato – chopped (optional but traditional)
- 2 tbsp roasted peanuts
- 1 tbsp mustard oil (for the iconic punch)
- Juice of half a lemon
- Salt to taste
- A pinch of black salt or chaat masala (optional)
- Fresh coriander – chopped
- Sev or bhujiya (for topping)
Steps To Cook:
- In a large bowl, mix puffed rice, peanuts, and veggies (onions, tomatoes, chili, potato).
- Drizzle mustard oil and squeeze in the lemon juice.
- Add salt and optional masalas to taste.
- Mix everything quickly and thoroughly—use your hands for authenticity!
- Top with sev or bhujiya and fresh coriander.
- Serve immediately (before it turns soggy!).
Tip: Make the chopped veggies the night before and store them in the fridge. In the morning, just toss everything together and you're out the door with a nutritious, zesty breakfast in hand.
